Cab Driver

by Neeko Bolos

In his rearview mirror the cab driver saw a broken man in his backseat. He washed up in his cab like some unexpected rainstorm that wasn’t backing down when it hit. He was wearing a suit, all worn and tattered. His tie was undone, shirt untucked, and collar unbuttoned. Right beside the man was a box. A faint glimmer caught the glimpse of the cab driver. He saw a picture of the man’s beautiful wife and two lovely daughters. The man shuffled around trying to figure out what he was going to do next. He picked up the picture and started tearing it up. After they got to the destination, the man asked how much he needed to pay. But the cab driver held up his hand and said, “Nothing, it’s on me.” Driving off the cab driver looked in the rearview mirror and saw the man smiling.
